There are so many beautiful places to visit via land travel in the Philippines, thus families should be ready to survive long drives. Even though going up to Baguio is now just around 5 hours, parents should be in full battle gear when they load kids in the car and start driving.
Here are 5 things you should never forget to that will help you enjoy going North or South of the country:
1. Never forget to check ahead for stop overs.
Stop overs are for both adults and kids. Once we were travelling to Baguio, we saw a very funny sign pointing to the restroom. It says “This way to SUCCESS!” Try to plan the stopovers that will suit the needs of the travellers. Gasoline stations in the provinces are sometimes kilometers apart.
2. Never forget to pack for the your “tummy”.
There should be enough food and water that will last for the entire trip. For very young kids, water in zippy cups are most convenient. Do not bring containers that you still need to pour in cups to be able to drink. Best to give each child their own drinking bottles.
Always have some wet-wipes in the car for easy cleaning up. Eating while travelling can be messy most of the time.
3. Never forget to bring travel pillows.
My kids have been into long drives (not less than 2hrs) since they were babies. We travel to Cavite from Manila almost twice a month. They mastered sleeping in the car. Travel pillows make their long drive comfy and hassle-free. They were so noisy at the beginning of the trip and were both dozed off after a few kilometers of travel.
4. Never forget to bring things for emergency.
A “magic bag” that contains things that your kids might need during the trip is a lifesaver. This may contain bandaids, gums, mints, vapor rub, playing cards, ear plugs, paracetamol, antihistamines, vaporizers, or anything you can think of that may save your day.
5. Never forget to pack entertainment.
Long drives are also moments when we can bond as a family. In the car, we usually have time to tell stories and jokes. We do not want the kids to use their gadgets while we travel. Playing a sound track that they are familiar with is a hit. We all end up singing the songs from Trolls movie or the movie “Sing” (well, just the kids and my husband! I am not a very good singer hehehe).
The kids also like to play “I Spy” game especially during traffic. “I spy with my two little eyes…” something they see around from billboards or other cars. Playing cards or travel game boards also help entertaining the kids during the long travel.
Travelling with kids is usually challenging and exhausting. But long travels can be fun and memorable once you have it all planned and you go prepared.
Where will be your next destination?
